Parts/CPUs/IBM PowerPC 450 850MHz
Why this part
The same embedded-core logic as BlueGene/L, one generation on: four cores instead of two, 850 MHz instead of 700, and a double-precision floating-point unit widened to keep the arithmetic throughput growing without the clock. Intrepid ran 163,840 cores of it at Argonne. The line's discipline was that each generation bought performance from parallelism and width rather than frequency, which is why BlueGene held its perf-per-watt lead for most of a decade.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
