IBM SP Switch2

The fabric of the RS/6000 SP line. Like every IBM interconnect of the period it appears in no spec string as a third-party vendor, which quietly understates IBM in fabric-share analysis.

Why this part

ASCI White was 512 sixteen-way SMP nodes rather than thousands of thin ones, so the switch carried far less traffic than a distributed-memory design of the same size would have. The fabric choice follows the node choice: buy fat nodes and you can afford a more modest network, because most communication never leaves the box. That trade reappears every time someone builds a large NVLink domain.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
