Intel Xeon Platinum 8280

28-core Xeon, the volume server part of the pre-Ice-Lake era.

Why this part

Cascade Lake, Intel's third product on 14nm after 10nm slipped repeatedly, and the generation during which AMD retook the server market with Rome. Frontera at TACC was bought as the largest academic system in the United States on the argument that a very large number of conventional cores serves a broad user base better than a smaller number of accelerated ones. That is a defensible position that has grown steadily harder to hold.

“Units recorded” sums only the edges where a public source states a quantity. It is a floor, not a total, and should never be read as installed base.
