Grand Chariot

Also known as Grand Chariot (2018); Hokkaido Grand Chariot

Operated by IIC, Hokkaido University at Hokkaido University Sapporo Campus .

Researched with AI assistance, checked by scripts. These rows were researched by AI agents reading public operator, laboratory and vendor sources, appended by scripts and checked by automated validation; no subject-matter expert has reviewed them (how this site is made). A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1350 of 1581 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 64 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

Figures are as last publicly reported for the configuration described below, not a live measurement. Where a system was upgraded in place, the post-upgrade configuration is shown and the earlier one appears in the timeline.

How it compares

Ranked against the other machines in this dataset that report the same figure: those that first came into service within two years of Grand Chariot, and those in Japan. Computed from our tables; a metric is ranked only when at least eight peers report it.

MetricValueAgainst its eraAgainst its country
Rmax2.00 PFlop/s#124 of 223 · bottom 46%#56 of 131 · top 42%
Rmax ÷ Rpeak65.6 %#129 of 216 · bottom 41%#95 of 130 · bottom 28%

Every metric is ranked largest-first, so a high power-draw rank means a big power draw, not a good one. Rmax ÷ Rpeak uses HPL-measured results only. Rankings move as machines are added; they describe this dataset, not the world.

What this machine is made of

One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

The read

Grand Chariot is the 2018 Fujitsu supercomputer of Hokkaido University's Information Initiative Center, installed in December 2018 beside the Xeon Phi 7250 system Polaire (288 nodes, 19,584 cores, 0.87 PFlop/s) and linked to it by 100 Gbps Omni-Path with a shared 16 PB DDN Lustre system, per Cornelis Networks' case study. It cites 1,004 PRIMERGY CX2550 nodes of two Xeon Gold 6148 (40 cores, 40,160 in total), two Omni-Path adapters per node and 3.08 PFlop/s peak; TOP500 lists 39,760 cores, 2.00 PFlop/s Rmax and 3.05 PFlop/s Rpeak, 95th in November 2018 to 463rd in June 2023 over 10 lists. Its successor is Grand Chariot 2 (grand-chariot-2).
