Iridis 4

Also known as Iridis4

Operated by University of Southampton at University of Southampton (Iridis) .

Researched with AI assistance, checked by scripts. These rows were researched by AI agents reading public operator, laboratory and vendor sources, appended by scripts and checked by automated validation; no subject-matter expert has reviewed them (how this site is made). A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1350 of 1581 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 64 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

How it compares

Ranked against the other machines in this dataset that report the same figure: those that first came into service within two years of Iridis 4, and those in United Kingdom. Computed from our tables; a metric is ranked only when at least eight peers report it.

MetricValueAgainst its eraAgainst its country
Rmax227.03 TFlop/s#171 of 227 · bottom 26%#30 of 44 · bottom 34%
Energy efficiency0.9 GF/W#114 of 186 · bottom 40%#17 of 21 · bottom 21%
Rmax ÷ Rpeak91.0 %#18 of 226 · top 8%#5 of 44 · top 9%
Power draw249 kW#141 of 188 · bottom 26%#15 of 21 · bottom 31%

Every metric is ranked largest-first, so a high power-draw rank means a big power draw, not a good one. Rmax ÷ Rpeak uses HPL-measured results only. Rankings move as machines are added; they describe this dataset, not the world.

What this machine is made of

One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

The read

University of Southampton's fourth-generation Iridis cluster, switched on in October 2013 in a GBP 3.2 million deal: IBM Intelligent Cluster hardware integrated by OCF, with 12,200 Xeon E5-2670 cores, 1 PB of disc, 50 TB of memory and Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors, billed as four times Iridis 3 and with around 350 projects expected in its first year. TOP500 lists an IBM iDataPlex DX360M4 with FDR InfiniBand, 12,000 cores, Rmax 227.03 TF, Rpeak 249.6 TF and 249.26 kW, ranked 180 in Nov 2013 and 452 in Nov 2015; the 12,000 versus 12,200 core counts differ between the two sources. Its successor line is iridis-5.

Source check

We fetched this system's own citations and recorded whether each page actually mentions it. This is a corroboration signal, not a fact check, and it is published so you can see how well the sourcing holds up rather than take it on trust.
