Supernova

Also known as WCSS Supernova; Supernova PRACE Tier-1 cluster

Operated by WCSS at WCSS Data Centre (Wroclaw) .

Phase 1 seed dataset, compiled by hand. These rows were built from public operator, laboratory and vendor sources. A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1263 of 1345 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 56 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

Figures are as last publicly reported for the configuration described below, not a live measurement. Where a system was upgraded in place, the post-upgrade configuration is shown and the earlier one appears in the timeline.

What this machine is made of

One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

The read

The Wroclaw Centre for Networking and Supercomputing's (WCSS) Supernova cluster, part of the PRACE Tier-1 infrastructure and the EGI and PL-Grid grids. The WCSS wiki (May 2021 web archive snapshot) gives 67.54 TFlop/s peak, the same Rpeak TOP500 lists for its 2011 entry, and describes 423 compute nodes of Intel Xeon E5345, L5420 and X5650 processors plus three GPU nodes, on InfiniBand DDR and QDR with Lustre scratch; it counts 5,168 cores, whereas TOP500 lists 6,348 cores (HP Cluster Platform 3000 BL2x220, Xeon X5650 2.66 GHz, InfiniBand), 57.41 TFlop/s Rmax, 194th in June 2011 and 360th in November 2011. An earlier 3,840-core entry of the same name appeared in November 2010 at 34.73 TFlop/s Rmax and is not recorded separately. A later WCSS wiki page marks the machine obsolete and decommissioned, without a date; the cluster was succeeded by Bem.

Source check

We fetched this system's own citations and recorded whether each page actually mentions it. This is a corroboration signal, not a fact check, and it is published so you can see how well the sourcing holds up rather than take it on trust.
