RE1A (Flatiron)

Also known as Flatiron RE1A

Operated by Flatiron Institute .

Researched with AI assistance, checked by scripts. These rows were researched by AI agents reading public operator, laboratory and vendor sources, appended by scripts and checked by automated validation; no subject-matter expert has reviewed them (how this site is made). A mechanical second-reader pass has since fetched every cited source: 1350 of 1581 systems have a readable citation that names them, and 64 are genuinely weakly sourced. Every claim carries its source and a confidence tier. Treat anything below verified as a lead, not a citation.

How it compares

Ranked against the other machines in this dataset that report the same figure: those that first came into service within two years of RE1A (Flatiron), and those in USA. Computed from our tables; a metric is ranked only when at least eight peers report it.

MetricValueAgainst its eraAgainst its country
Rmax1.77 PFlop/s#242 of 246 · bottom 3%#153 of 332 · top 46%
Energy efficiency15.2 GF/W#73 of 130 · bottom 45%#30 of 162 · top 18%

Power draw117 kW#114 of 133 · bottom 15%#145 of 171 · bottom 16%

Every metric is ranked largest-first, so a high power-draw rank means a big power draw, not a good one. Rmax ÷ Rpeak uses HPL-measured results only. Rankings move as machines are added; they describe this dataset, not the world.

What this machine is made of

One row per supplier relationship. “Supplier at build” is the company that shipped the part at the time; where that company has since been acquired, the parent it rolls up to today is shown beside it. That distinction is what makes ticker-level aggregation possible across a thirty-year dataset.

The read

Sibling of RE1 (flatiron-re1) at the Flatiron Institute: Lenovo ThinkSystem SD650-N V2 with Xeon Platinum 8362 32-core 2.8 GHz, NVIDIA A100 40GB and InfiniBand HDR, installed 2022. TOP500 lists 17,856 cores, the same as RE1, with Rmax 1.77 and Rpeak 3.01 PFlop/s at 116.81 kW (power measurement level 1); it appeared only once, at 488th in November 2022, and it needed a higher power draw than RE1 for a lower result. The A100 40GB and 8362 differences from RE1 are the only hardware distinction TOP500 shows, and no Flatiron page describing RE1A was found, so TOP500 is the sole source, the tier is reported and the status date is the single list it appeared on.
